What's on the CD-ROM?

Most of the software included in the CD is either freeware or shareware. Freeware means just that—it's free (yippee!); shareware, on the other hand, is not free. Shareware used to mean any software offered expressly to be shared between users, but for some time has meant try-before-you-buy software. The idea of shareware is to allow the user a free trial period of the software (usually 30 days) before requiring that payment be made by those who want to keep it. In other words: try it; if you like it, buy it.

WinZip for Windows 3.x and Later Systems (wz16v61.exe and winzip95.exe)

WinZip brings the convenience of Windows to the use of ZIP files without requiring PKZIP and PKUNZIP (except for special features, like spanning multiple floppies). It features an intuitive point-and-click, drag-and-drop interface for viewing, running, extracting, adding, deleting, and testing files in archives. ARJ, LZH, and ARC files are supported via external programs. WinZip interfaces to most virus scanners.

The Internet Lexicon for Windows 3.x and Windows 95/NT Systems (ilexfree.exe)

With nearly 1,500 acronyms and terms described, defined, and cross-referenced, Free Internet Lexicon and Networking Dictionary for Windows is the only known resource of its kind. A sample of the PC/Internet Lexicon contains the complete Internet Terms and Internet Acronyms modules, the Top Level Domains List, and way too many smileys. This is a self-extracting, auto-installing EXE file with uninstaller. It's in Windows Help format, with some surprising features.

FTP Client for Windows 3.x and Later Systems (cutftp32.exe and cutftp16.exe)

CuteFTP is one of very few programs that enable novice users to utilize the capabilities of FTP without having to know all the details of the protocol itself. The strongest point of CuteFTP is its capability to gather almost every available bit of information about files and directory structure of a remote system and present it to the user in an easy-to use file-manager-like browsing screen. CuteFTP will also keep data transfers to a minimum by means of storing all the data it can to a temporary file. One of the best things about this client is that you don't have to do separate transfers for 7- and 8-bit files—it's automatic.

Telnet Client for Windows 3.x and Windows 95 Systems (ewan1052.exe)

EWAN (Emulator Without A good Name), is a very easy-to-use Telnet client. This will be useful for accessing rs.internic.net, and for accessing the shell account on your Web server.

Paint Shop Pro for Windows 3.x and Windows 95/NT systems (psp32bit.zip and psp311.zip)

Paint Shop Pro is a powerful Windows graphics program that provides painting, photo retouching, image enhancement, editing, and color enhancement functions. An image browser, batch image conversion, image viewing and printing, screen capture, and scanner support (TWAIN-Compliant) are also provided. Enhance your other applications with Paint Shop Pro's OLE support.

Paint Shop Pro is a raster format image-editing program, a type of software more commonly known as a bitmap editor. Raster image formats break a picture into a grid of equally sized pieces, called pixels, and records color information for each pixel. Common examples of raster formats include the Windows BMP format and the CompuServe GIF format.

Unlike most bitmap editors, Paint Shop Pro isn't confined to a short list of raster file formats. It provides full support for all of the most popular raster formats, full or partial support for many less popular raster formats, and can read nine meta and vector image formats. It is also our favorite shareware graphics program. While this isn't nearly as feature-rich as the commercial applications of its type (Photoshop, PhotoPaint, and so on), it's a great start.

WebForms for Windows 3.x and Windows 95/NT systems (wbfrm21b.zip)

WebForms is a World Wide Web forms generator that automatically creates HTML forms and reads their responses, enabling you to conduct surveys, collect orders for your products—anything you can think of! Responses are automatically sent to your mailbox, then read by WebForms and collected in a response database. It's all controlled by you, and all you need is an e-mail address. NO CGI REQUIRED!

Be aware, though, that this software will sign your HTML (this form created by. . .). This has become a problem with many software applications, but it's simple enough to go back to the raw code and delete this information.

Map This is a program designed to create mapping files for clickable image maps (ISMAPs) for the World Wide Web. This can simplify the process of creating ISMAPs, but you should still understand the code in the map file (which can be created and accessed via a text editor).

HTML Reference Library v2.2 for Windows 3.x and Later Systems (htmlib9522.zip and htmlib22.zip)

This reference software, using the Internet RFC as an information base, is a nonline reference library of currently supported HTML elements—their syntax and use. It is extremely helpful in searching for HTML tags or to see which tags are compatible with which browsers. HTML Library also includes the HTMLib Colour Wizard, which can be used to get an idea of what different color schemes will look like when used in HTML documents (and helps decipher the 6-digit code).

HTML Notepad Version 2.0 for Windows 3.x and Later Systems (htmln231.zip and htmln295.zip)
